Had it not been years after Confederation, for the building of the Canada Southern Railway in 1872, five it is quite possible Dutton would never have come into existence. In fact, the village got its name from Southern. the chief engineer of the Canada Shortly after the railroad was started, A. J Leitch and D. McLaws started clearing the site for the new village. The west part of the village was surveyed by A. J. Leitch and the easternpart by George Bennett.

Consequently, there was considerable rivalry between the factions of the east and west as to the name that should be given to the settlement. The settlers on the west side insisted on the name "Lisgar", after the then Governor General....but those on the east side wanted it called Bennetville. The point could not be settled and as a result two villages were formed instead of one. The railway settled the matter when it erected a station on the new line and designated it '1Dutton" Later, when the government gave the village a Post Office, it was called "Dutton I' and the other two names passed into oblivion.

Today, Dutton, with a population of 1138, is a pleasant village with well landscaped lots, tree-lined streets and floral displays which enhance its warm atmosphere. These words provide a friendly welcome for potential new arrivals to the village.
